An Intro to Me

Hey,

Welcome to my brand new blog, where I'll be talking all about the art of Cinema. My name is Dom and I am a Sophomore at North Central College. I'm an English major with a minor in Film and Screen Studies, so this will be a resource I utilize often in order to continue analyzing film. Aside from academics, I also am a member of the Cross Country and Track and Field teams here at North Central. I love to run, workout, watch movies, write, listen to music, and talk anything art.

So, why Film 490? It may seem like there would be an obvious answer, considering my Film and Screen Studies minor, but then again, why that? I have loved movies for as long as I can remember, but not in the same way as I do today. When I was a kid, I was a Pixar fanatic. Every toy in my room, every halloween costume, every drawing I drew, the background on my first iPod, all Pixar. Other animated movies from Disney or Dreamworks were entertaining, but they weren't even close to the top of the pedestal where Pixar sat unmatched. If you're curious, most years I was Buzz on halloween. I want to say it was three years in a row but I'm not 100% on that. When I got a little bit older, it was Marvel that took the cake. Now the video games I played, the Blue Rays I bought, the posters in my room, the youtube videos I watched, all Marvel. It wasn't too long after that I joined the Media Program at my high school, and shot my own videos on what my teacher Mr. G called, the 'Media 1 Cameras'. The cheap ones. At that time I started watching a wider variety of movies, all classics with big name directors. As time went on I became obsessed with watching new material. It wasn't like I had never seen 'The Shawshank Redemption' or 'Forrest Gump', I just didn't comprehend how good the big kid movies were until I was a big kid.

Once Covid hit in 2020, I found myself watching 1-3 movies everyday. Learning more names, seeing more shots within a full narrative that I had seen out of context, and building a love for real Filmmaking. I also started trying to write a couple things of my own. As it is for everyone, I wrote some terrible stuff. However, as time went on I started getting a better idea of what made a good story. I wrote a couple pieces that were somewhat thought provoking, and I shot them. Some were successes and some were failures, but I finally got enough done where I could start experimenting. I still write today, and it's a dream of mine to be a Writer/Director. We'll see how that goes, but for now I will be writing on here, documenting what I watch.
